O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. The judges were surprised by her performance and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two competitors, judge Werner reported that newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
